Marvin finds at AREA 51 an old, dusty alien spaceship. It's a stardust gondola left behind by the Neensziss. With him it is possible to fly to Venus. Takaarrath, his companion, belonging to the alien race Neensziss, really discovers the legendary 'City of the Thousand Stars' there, called GLEESITT. Takaarrath's memories only partially return. While he is haunted by excerpts of his past and fantasized about the former ‘Guardian of the stars’, Marvin gets to deal with the idiosyncratic nature of the Securing autocracy, the computer brain of GLEESITT.

When Marvin finds a time transmitter on Venus in the deserted city of the Neensziss, he is transferred 225 years back to the past. There he meets by chance a young woman with the look of Majenna. She is being held by the Neensziss in a sterile room. Only slowly he becomes aware of the factual connections, after he has freed her, and both are on the run.

FUTURE I is pulled out of the programmed trajectory by gravity of a nearby neutron star. The strong neutron shower of the star has already damaged an external control relay and it threatens a disaster. Liam dares to do the impossible. He is aware that he leads only a quasi-life and sacrifices himself for the crew. Equipped with only a single space suit, he goes to the outer wall of the ship to down the existing lead alloy protective blinds on the exterior control relay, when it hits him the full strength of the radiation.
